Dr Mithun Varghese is an Interventional Cardiologist with expertise in various facets of coronary intervention. His specific area of expertise is ‘precision angioplasty’ using intra-coronary imaging to achieve long term coronary patency and optimal clinical outcomes. His other avenues of interest include valvular and adult congenital heart disease, management of difficult-to-control hypercholesterolemia and treatment of chemotherapy-related cardiac dysfunction.
Following his Basic Physician Training, Mithun finished his Cardiology training at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He went on to complete an integrated Coronary and Structural Interventional Fellowship at the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, one of the highest ranked hospitals for Cardiology services in the United States. During this stint he pioneered and published on the role of intravascular brachytherapy in the management of coronary restenosis, which is widely cited in high-impact Cardiology journals. At Mount Sinai he additionally trained in Rotablation angioplasty, percutaneous Left Ventricular Assist Device-assisted angioplasties, endo-myocardial biopsies and trans-catheter aortic and mitral valvular interventions. He also has expertise in various adult congenital heart interventions including trans-catheter closure of PFO/ASD/PDA. This launched the trajectory of the interventional facet of his career. In 2015 the European Society of Cardiology recognised Mithun’s experience as a clinician and researcher, and bestowed on him the Fellowship of European Society of Cardiology (FESC).
Mithun relocated to Adelaide to work towards specialist college assessment and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). Thereafter, he served as Professor of Cardiology at the highly ranked, Christian Medical College, Vellore, India before accepting a permanent clinical position at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, Adelaide. With the outstanding support of the Cardiology team, Mithun successfully performed the first Atrial Septal Defect Device Closure at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in May 2021.
An ardent believer of the aphorism ‘prevention is better than cure’, Mithun is passionate about enabling patients to avoid complications of heart disease. He aims to provide them with a comprehensive assessment and practicable treatment plan. He believes that clinical and procedural excellence can only be achieved through evidence-based, ethical, and patient-centred care propelled by objective and systematic medical research.
